PARTNER SPOTLIGHT: SCSEP (Senior Community Service Employment Program)

SCSEP is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration. This program helps older workers build the experience and confidence they need to find permanent employment. Who is eligible? People 55 or older; income eligible (low income), unemployed and seeking employment. Those eligible serve their communities while gaining valuable on-the-job training through paid temporary assignments with local non-profit and government organizations. The program is administered through the Northern Indiana Workforce Board (NIWB) in South Bend.

Each participant gets paid minimum wage (through SCSEP) and works 20 hours a week. They generally stay at one location 6-12 months. Some of the criteria:
  • They cannot be drivers or riders
  • They must be assigned to a supervisor
  • Supervisor would be responsible for participant’s time card, evaluation, etc.
  • They must be trained and stay in the same job the entire time
  • Since this is a stepping stone to employment, they could be hired by SVdP

Saint Vincent de Paul is a host agency for participants at the District Council Office. SCSEP is currently working with 15 other host agencies in St. Joseph County.
